En genomgående röd tråd i Peters forskning är hans intresse för de mänskliga aspekterna som är del i utförande av innovationsarbete samt hur de relaterar till lärande och utveckling som sker integrerat i utförande av arbetet. En direkt länk mellan det arbetslivs- och organisationspedagogiska forskningsfältet och innovationsteknik är det teorifält som har vuxit fram under benämningen praktikbaserad innovation. Med praktikbaserad innovation avses utveckling eller förnyelse av den egna verksamheten som grundar sig i aktörers arbetsintegrerade lärande, och kan exempelvis vara i form av nya arbetsmetoder, rutiner, produkter eller tjänster.
En fråga som blir relevant att ställa i sådana sammanhang är hur är det möjligt att organisera miljöer som gynnar lärande och utveckling av kompetens som kan resultera i praktikbaserade innovationer? I sin föreläsning riktar Peter fokus mot praktiker som av olika skäl står inför utmaningar i att hantera en komplex omgivning som kräver nyskapande och innovation i olika former. Det kan handla om allt ifrån att utveckla nya produkter och/eller metoder för att driva utveckling, till att mer radikalt omskapa sin verksamhet för att kunna möta nya identifierade behov. En förutsättning är med andra ord att individer och organisationer i allt högre grad utvecklar kompetens som möjliggör utförande och ledning av arbete som bidrar till framväxt av praktikbaserad innovation.
