Ioanna has a research experience of 13+ years in four different academic institutions and in collaboration with multiple industrial partners. Her core expertise is on heat transfer and aerodynamics applied in gas turbines. Her current focus is on the application of machine learning methods in energy and production processes and fundamental fluid mechanics research. She has a Dipl.-Ing. in Mechanical Engineering from the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki (Greece, 2009) and a MSc in Gas Turbine Technology from Cranfield University (UK, 2010). She holds a DPhil in Engineering Science from the University of Oxford (UK, 2016).
She has participated in multiple national and EU projects and has led the successfully completed the DYNOP project (2018-2021, 1mEuro, funded by the Swedish Knowledge Foundation and co-financed by partner companies in Sweden). She has developed courses on experimental methods and simulation for continuous professional development in the FutureE and Premium projects, and she is teaching in several courses in the topics of energy and production at Bachelor’s, Master’s, and PhD level. She has organized technical and panel sessions at multiple international conferences and served as the chair (2018-2020) and vanguard chair (2020-2022) of the ASME IGTI education committee. She is a reviewer for multiple journals and international awards. She has co-supervised 5 PhD students and 11 MSc students and published more than 40 peer-reviewed articles. She has been the lead author in three publications that received a best paper award by the International Gas Turbine Institute, two in the education division (2018, 2020) and one in the cycle innovations division (2010).
My research focus includes the development of smart sensors, decision support systems, modelling, diagnostics, and optimization, experimental fluid mechanics and heat transfer, boiling heat transfer, NIR spectroscopy.
My academic expertise is in measurement techniques, smart sensors, turbine aerodynamics and heat transfer, experimental testing for turbomachinery applications. I have substantial experience in simulation, industrial process control and optimization as well as mathematical programming and numerical methods, particularly for fluid mechanics applications.
