Multi-core technology is recognized as a key component to cost-efficiently enable new products. It opens up for the possibility for hardware consolidation thus reducing the overall hardware and electronics cost of the system, but also results in tremendous challenges. The AUTOSAR consortium has developed a world-wide standard for automotive embedded software systems, which includes support for multi-cores. The standard can now be used in non automotive domains, such as industrial automation. The project will in an AUTOSAR context address the issues of hardware consolidation on multicore architectures, how to achieve good performance, and how to ensure timing predictability to meet hard real-time requirements. We believe that cooperation between companies in different industrial segments with common technical challenges will provide better solutions. Therefore, the project consortium has partners from both the automotive and industrial automation domains.
